Patients on Waiting List

🌿 One Decision. Many Lives.

When life ends for one person, hope begins for many others.

A single organ donor can save up to 8 lives — giving the gift of sight, health, and a second chance to those who have been waiting, sometimes for years. Organ donation is not just a medical act. It is an act of humanity, compassion, and legacy. Your kindness can continue long after you are gone.

"Don't take your organs to heaven — Heaven knows we need them here."

Frequently Asked Questions
What is organ donation?
Organ donation is a noble act which gives us an opportunity to save many lives after our death. As many patients suffer from end stage diseases of various organs, organ donation is the only ray of hope for them. The donated organs are transplanted into patients who are suffering from end stage organ failure.
Which organs can be donated?
Vital organs like heart, liver, two kidneys, pancreas, intestine, and lungs can be donated only after brain death. Cornea (eyes), skin and other tissues can be donated after cardiac death. A living person can also donate a single kidney or part of the liver to a close relative.
What is brain death?
Brain death occurs when the brain stem is irreparably damaged. A brain dead individual cannot regain consciousness and cannot breathe on their own. The heart can continue to function on a ventilator for 36 to 72 hours, during which organs can be retrieved after consent from close relatives. Brain death can only occur in the ICU.
Is there any chance of survival of a brain dead individual?
No. A brain dead individual is declared dead and cannot be revived. The set of tests done by experts leaves no possible doubt about the diagnosis of brain death. Brain death has nothing to do with mercy killing — organs are taken only after the person is declared brain dead.
Is the donor's body given back to the relatives?
Yes. The body is given back to the relatives to perform the last rites after organs are retrieved. The organs are retrieved only for therapeutic purposes.
Is there any disfigurement after organ donation?
No. The organs are removed carefully by skilled surgeons in an operation theatre. There is a surgical cut which is sutured just like any other surgery. There is no disfigurement of the donor's body.
Are the organs given only to the rich?
No. Organs are given based on priority criteria like age, blood group, waiting period, and clinical status. In Maharashtra, the Government has given guidelines to distribute organs on a priority score. Money, race, and religion are not criteria for distribution.
Does our religion support organ donation?
Yes. All religions in India consider organ donation a noble act.
Is it legal?
Yes. In India, The Human Organ Transplantation Act was passed in 1994. It recognizes brain stem death, regulates removal, storage and transplantation of organs for therapeutic purposes, and prevents commercial dealings in human organs.
How can one become an organ donor?
Register on NOTTO (notto.abdm.gov.in/register) using your Aadhaar. Share your wish with your close relatives as their consent is required before retrieving the organs even if you have registered.
